In one of the more incredible scenes of the Bible, God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, as a burnt offering. We, the readers, are told that this is a test, but Abraham did not know this. In obedience, Abraham took Isaac up to the region of Moriah, and made all the necessary preparations. At the point of climax, with the knife raised in the air, God intervened.
By his willingness to obey completely, God knew that Abraham trusted him. "'Do not lay a hand on the boy,' he said. 'Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.'" (Gen 22:12)
Abraham named that place "The LORD will provide." At the point when it was clear Abraham would obey him, Yahweh (God's revealed name, indicated in most English versions by the capital spelling of LORD) furnished a substitute sacrifice. Abraham surrendered, God provided and blessed.
